Capitol Casino hosts POY

By Arnold Warner

On Oct. 18 at 10:00 a.m. poker players at Capitol Casino in Sacramento had the opportunity to take a shot at playing with three-time NorCal Tournament Player of the Year Rellie Sigua and knocking him off his perch—at least for the day.

With a buy-in of $330, 61 entries were made creating a prize pool of $18,300. It promised to be a great event with 25-minute levels, 10,000 chips, and a deep structure built for lots of skillful play.

After more than eight hours the field had finally been whittled down to two: Kenny Lee of El Dorado Hills and Ying Vang of Sacramento. Their decision to chop gave them each a payday over $4,800.

Lee, who actually doesn’t play regularly other than with friends, said, “This is my first tournament in a long time. I was bored and heard about the tournament and decided to play.” He did add though, “(Capitol Casino) is the best place to play poker in town.”

Clutching a beer, Vang commented, “I told a couple of my friends last night that if I made it to the final table I was going to get drunk … and I can’t complain!”

Capitol Casino’s tournament director Mark Pritchett commented, “On behalf of all of us here at Capitol Casino we would like to thank The Cardroom News— Randy and Paul—for hosting the 2014 POY event with us. We also would like to thank Rellie for making the journey from the Bay Area to the Valley to play in this year’s event. We are looking forward to even more signups for next year’s points race so that the next POY champion comes from Sacramento. We’ll do our best to knock Rellie off the top, but until then he is the man!”

This was Sigua’s fourth POY tournament during his three-year reign as champion, and he has yet to make a deep run in one, let alone cash. Read into that whatever you want, because with only a few weeks left he’s in the lead again in an attempt to make it a fourth straight year as the top poker tournament player in Northern California.
There was no bounty on his head at Capitol as there has been at previous events, but that didn’t mean people weren’t gunning for him. The ironic thing was the player who knocked him out, Sacramento’s Chansavang Oriyavong, must have missed the announcement at the beginning of the tournament because he didn’t even know who he had eliminated until asked about it afterward. “I would have talked some smack if I knew he was the Player of the Year, but now it’s too late,” he said with a smile.

Sigua’s tale of the hand that sent him to the rail is familiar to anyone who has ever played the game of poker. He said that he’d been card dead for the first three levels, never getting much over his starting stack of 10,000, but never going much below it either.

“I min raised under the gun with Q-J suited,” he said. It folds to the button who makes it 2½X raise, small blind folds, big blind folds. I call to see what he’s going to do on the flop. Whatever flops I can pretty much make my read. Flop comes queen high, 7-6 rainbow. I check it to him. He makes an overbet on a dry board, so I put him on A-K, nines, or tens, or whatnot. So I shipped my whole stack in knowing that I was ahead, and sure enough, he calls me with tens—and the river was a ten.

“How I made my read was, why make such a big bet on the flop if you have an overpair or A-Q? Why not make a value bet rather than making a big bet? So that’s where I got my read from. I knew my Q-J was good.”
Despite the brevity of his stay Sigua said he had a very pleasant experience. “I had a short, good time. This is my very first time here. It’s always been a place I wanted to go visit, because I’ve heard a lot about because it is where J.C. (Tran) came from. This was his stomping ground. So I wanted to see what the players were like here.”
He also looks forward to his next visit. “This is a place I’m looking at to play whenever I’m out here in Sacramento. It’s a beautiful complex. I like it. People are friendly. They’re very warm. They’re nice and they try to get to know you well real quick.”
As for his prospects at a fourth Player of the Year title, he said, “I’m just doing whatever I can. I still have the passion for the game and that’s what I thrive on.”

2014 POY points as of Nov. 1

With only one month to go Rellie Sigua is narrowly hanging onto the lead in his bid for a fourth consecutive POY title. Hot on his heels is L. Odegard of San Jose, a little more than 300 points behind.
