Lucky Chances puts bounty on POY Sigua

By Arnold Warner

On Oct. 28 The Cardroom’s 2011 Player of the Year, Rellie Sigua, was celebrated at his “home” casino with a tournament named in his honor. Lucky Chances Casino even put a $1,000 bounty on his head to make certain he felt special.

While it had the buy-in ($245) and prize guarantee ($10,000 to first place) of their regular Sunday tournament, this event made the room buzz. The large field (about 25 percent more than average) and awareness of Sigua’s bounty and the size of his stack caused people to play on high alert.

Unfortunately for him he could never gain any traction that day as his stack melted away little by little. With the blinds at 300/600 and two players (with stacks in the 12,000 to 15,000 range) all-in ahead of him he decided to gamble his last 1,400 and call from the small blind with a lowly 6-2 which he figured should at least give him live cards. Then the big blind went all-in too, so he had a shot at quadrupling up.

The first all-in had A-K, the second K-Q, but the crusher was the big blind who had A-A. “I flopped a 6 and nothing else on the board improved anyone’s hand, so if the big blind hadn’t woke up with aces I would have won,” Sigua said.

He had a great time though, and really appreciated the support from Lucky Chances. “Lucky Chances will always be the place for me, my home base,” he said. “I love the people I play with here. They bring me lots of challenge.”

Lucky Chances reciprocates the feeling. Tournament director Robert Bloom said, “Lucky Chances is very proud of Rellie winning the 2011 NorCal Cardroom Player of the Year. Apparently so are our players. We had a very large field (158 entries) show up to try and collect the $1,000 bounty on his head. Dan Ko of San Francisco, a 10-year veteran of tournament play, collected the bounty.  It was the largest regular $10,000 guaranteed Sunday field since the Battle of the Bay in June. Personally I’m impressed with the fact it looks like Rellie will repeat in 2012, which he stated to me at the beginning of the year was one of his goals.”

Fourteen players wound up making the money, with the top three making a deal to bring an end to the day. First through 14th and their payouts were: Ron Minnis, $8,600; Joe Fernandez, $5,790; Oliver Entine, $5,760; David Names, $2,780; Jane Guan, $2,430; Lawrence Chow, $2,090; Scott Johnson, $1,740; Munir Shahin,  $1,390; Glen Campbell, $1,040; Art Dyogi,  $1,040; Tai Tran, $700; Jaime Rascon, $700; Joe Austin, $350; Brett Wilson, $350.
