Mortimer’s Card Room in Marina abruptly closed its doors for good in late September, much to the surprise of their employees and customers. The Monterey County Weekly speculated that the recent recession and the city’s “relatively recent” five percent tax were likely factors in the closing.
They quoted Jesse Crawford who has been a manager there for the last five years as saying, “It’s an emotional time for us. Some of the employees I’ve known for 20 years. I’ll miss working for an iconic business. Anywhere you go in the county, someone always has a nice story to tell about it.”
