WPT back to Bay 101 in March

The 16th Annual Bay 101 Casino Shooting Star Tournament will be held March 5 to 9 and will remain a $10,000 buy-in World Poker Tour event. Bay 101 has also announced that world-renowned tournament director Matt Savage will be back to host the event once again.

Savage said, “The Bay 101 Shooting Star is my favorite stop on the tour. It is the most unique tournament in poker with $5,000 bounties, $10,000 to the Day 1A and Day1B chip leaders, six-handed play with two hour levels, and the best poker fans in the world. I am happy to be returning to my hometown of San Jose.”

Last year’s event was one of the few stops on the WPT that had enjoyed an increase in participation. The 2011 Shooting Star had 415 players, up from the 333 players that competed in 2010.

The 2011 Shooting Star final table was very impressive, with a cast of six that included WPT television host/commentator Mike Sexton, Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, Vivik Rajkumar, local pro Casey McCarrel, and eventual champion, Alan Sternberg. Sternberg took home $1,013,500 and a $25,000 seat into the WPT Championship at Bellagio.

Some of this year’s Shooting Stars will be Phil Hellmuth, Maria Ho, Barry Greenstein, November Niner Matt Giannetti, Allen Bari, Jennifer Harman, Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, Mike Sexton, Scotty Nguyen, Phil Laak, and Jennifer Tilly.

Bay 101 will once again host a $2,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament on Sunday, March 4. This event attracted 256 players last year and was split by local players Pat Lyons and Mimi Luu for over $100,000 each.

Satellites for this year’s WPT Shooting Star will begin Monday, Feb. 6 and run through Saturday March 3. All satellites are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. starts and you can sign up in advance by mail or at the main cage.

From Feb. 6 to Feb. 24 satellites will have a $220 + $20 + $10 buy-in (except Saturdays).
